I keep painting seahorses, and this one finally got out of the water.
He’s standing on a sidewalk between a yellow building and a coral one. He’s looking up at the rooftops, the way anyone does in a town they’ve never visited before. Green hills and grey mountains sit behind the buildings, and the sky above him is a flat, bright blue.
I drew it with Posca paint markers rather than a brush. Once the ink dried, I sealed the whole card with gloss varnish. So the colours stay bright, and the surface wipes clean if it ever needs it.
This seahorse art card measures 3.5 x 2.5 inches. That’s the standard ACEO size, so it’s the same as a trading card. It’s a one-of-a-kind original, not a print. I signed the back and slipped it into a clear protective sleeve. Then I pack every card inside a rigid mailer, so it arrives flat.
It stands up in a small easel, or it fits a standard ACEO frame. Some collectors keep their cards in a binder instead. Keep it out of direct sun and it will stay this bright for years.
ACEO stands for Art Cards, Editions and Originals. Artists have worked at this size for decades. It makes original art small enough to collect, trade, frame, or tuck inside a card for someone.
Every ACEO in my shop is an original painting, so no two are ever alike. If this seahorse art card is your kind of thing, there are more seahorses around. Love Beneath the Waves is a larger painting of two of them.
I paint each card at home in Raleigh, North Carolina.
